Michelle Obama will not attend President-Elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, though former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend.
A statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama confirmed Michelle’s absence, while also noting that former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush plan to attend. Michelle also skipped the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter last week, where all living presidents were present.
Since 2008, Michelle Obama has attended every inauguration, including Trump’s first in 2017, when she and Barack were leaving the White House. In a 2023 interview, she reflected on her experience at that inauguration, noting the lack of diversity on stage, and shared that she cried afterward from the emotional strain of her time in the White House.
Meanwhile, at a recent state funeral for Jimmy Carter, a friendly conversation between Barack Obama and Donald Trump went viral. They laughed and chatted while other former first ladies, including Melania Trump and Laura Bush, sat nearby.
