Kathie Lee Gifford recently shared an extraordinary story on the Sage Steele Podcast, revealing a lesser-known chapter of her life. Sitting in a knitted sweater and jeans, the legendary TV host and singer reflected on her career, the grief of losing her husband, Frank Gifford, and her complicated friendship with President Donald Trump.
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Kathie recounted a chilling incident from 31 years ago. While preparing to host the Miss America Pageant with her newborn daughter, the FBI warned Frank that a dangerous criminal had targeted Kathie. They advised Frank to act normally, so the suspect wouldn’t realize he was being surveilled. But Frank, concerned for his family’s safety, turned to Donald Trump for help.
Kathie became emotional recalling Trump’s reassuring words: “Don’t you worry about it. I’ve got your girls.” Frank, comforted by Trump’s promise, called the FBI to say Trump would handle the situation. Kathie had no idea.
The next day, Trump called Kathie personally, sending his helicopter to ensure she and her daughter’s safety and arranging for a security team. Kathie was surrounded by armed guards until the threat was neutralized.
Kathie vividly remembered the moment she realized the severity of the danger. “There were four of his security guys there,” she recalled. For days, she had protection, but it wasn’t until she read a newspaper headline about a death threat against her that she fully understood the danger.
Despite the threat, Kathie refused to back down. When asked if she wanted to cancel, her response was clear: “Hell no! Nobody’s going to make me afraid.”
