I declined to allow my mother-in-law to meet my baby — her vindictive scheme unfolded

Many studies show that approximately 85% of new mothers experience post-birth sadness. Gretchen, a first-time mom, is struggling to adapt to motherhood, prompting her to seek solitude from her relatives.

Gretchen’s Letter:

Fifteen days have passed since I gave birth, and I feel completely exhausted. My mother came to lend a hand, but I had to firmly request privacy from my mother-in-law, insisting, “My family requires space. I will inform you when you can visit your grandson.” She persistently called every day, forcing me to assert, “I am not prepared yet, even if it takes several months!” She acquiesced.

This morning, I awoke to my baby’s piercing cries. To my dismay, my husband appeared shocked. My distress mounted upon discovering that nine members of his family had shown up at our home without prior notice. When I confronted him about this breach of trust, he dismissed my concerns, implying that my reaction was exaggerated and unmerited.

Feeling overwhelmed and disregarded, I witnessed my mother-in-law’s smug expression. In silence, I grabbed my bag and hastily departed, still clad in my pajamas. Do you believe I overreacted?

Sincerely,

Gretchen
