Kevin loved Halloween, and this year, as he helped decorate his house, he was excited about all the candy he would collect. But as he walked through his neighborhood, he noticed one house, Mrs. Kimbly’s, was completely undecorated. Unlike all the others with pumpkins, cobwebs, and skeletons, her house looked sad and abandoned.
Mrs. Kimbly was an elderly woman who lived alone, and Kevin had helped her before with chores. He wondered if she needed help, so he offered to decorate her house for her. But when he knocked, she angrily turned him away, saying she didn’t need any help. Kevin was confused—why wouldn’t she want to celebrate?
Later that evening, Kevin told his mom about Mrs. Kimbly’s reaction, but his mom suggested that maybe Mrs. Kimbly was feeling lonely and didn’t want anyone’s help. Kevin wasn’t convinced. He thought Mrs. Kimbly was just sad, and decided to decorate her house anyway. He gathered his Halloween decorations and set to work, determined to spread some Halloween cheer.
But when Mrs. Kimbly saw what he had done, she was furious and even smashed one of Kevin’s carved pumpkins. Hurt but still caring, Kevin apologized and ran home, unable to understand why she was so upset.
Later that night, while out trick-or-treating, Kevin couldn’t shake the feeling that Mrs. Kimbly might be all alone. He decided to return to her house and sit on the porch, handing out his own candy to the other kids so they wouldn’t vandalize her home.
After a while, Mrs. Kimbly came outside, and this time, she was calmer. She explained that Halloween reminded her of how lonely she felt, with no children or grandchildren to celebrate with. Kevin listened and gently told her that she didn’t have to be alone, that she could still join in the fun.
Mrs. Kimbly smiled, and for the first time in years, she allowed herself to enjoy Halloween, thanks to Kevin’s kindness.
