Leighton and her boyfriend, John, head to his favorite steakhouse for his birthday dinner. She expects a pleasant night—until the bill arrives.
John slides it over with a grin. “You got this, right?”
Leighton freezes. “You know my rule—I don’t pay for meat. I’ll cover the wine and sides, but the steak is on you.”
John’s face darkens. “It’s my birthday, Leighton. My girlfriend is supposed to treat me.”
“I did! I got you a pricey gift, dressed up, and paid for most of this meal. But I won’t compromise my principles.”
Fuming, John storms off to the restroom. Leighton waits, pays for her share, and leaves him to settle his.
Outside, she finds him sulking. “Did you pay?” she asks.
“No. They’ll think I dined and dashed!”
Leighton shakes her head. “That’s on you.”
John explodes. “You’re selfish! Just pay for the damn steak!”
She walks away, leaving him there. Later, she texts: Just go back and pay.
His response? More accusations.
