Public transportation often leads to arguments over seats. Recently, a story went viral about an elderly woman demanding a girl with a prosthetic leg give up her seat, saying she wasn’t “disabled enough.”
The girl explained: “I lost my left leg in an accident and use a prosthetic. With long pants, it looks like I have two normal legs. While I can walk and run, keeping balance on moving trains is hard.
“I was sitting in a reserved seat when a woman told me to move. I explained I needed it too, but she insisted I was just a lazy kid. She even brought the train conductor, who also told me to move. Frustrated, I rolled up my pant leg, showed my prosthetic, and refused to leave. The woman turned red and got off at the next stop.
“I could’ve explained earlier, but it’s a sensitive topic for me.”
Many disabled people shared similar experiences. One woman’s husband, who uses crutches, faces insults for using disabled seats and parking spots until people see his disability. Another, who has had multiple leg surgeries, is often judged because her pain isn’t always visible.
It’s sad that people demand proof instead of simply being understanding.
