A year after my husband Jason passed away in a car accident, I was struggling to stay strong for my son, Liam. One day, as we left the grocery store, we saw a homeless man sitting with a cold, trembling dog. Liam pleaded for us to help, but I hesitated—we didn’t have much to give. The man then asked if we would take his dog, Daisy, because he couldn’t care for her anymore. Despite my worries, I couldn’t say no, especially with Liam’s hopeful eyes.
Daisy quickly became part of our family. Liam loved her, and she brought joy and warmth into our home, something we’d been missing since Jason’s death. A month later, I found a letter from the man who had given her to us. It read:
Dear Daisy,
I hope you’re warm and happy. I miss you so much, but I know I made the right choice. You deserve better. Thank you for being my friend when I had no one. I’ll never forget you.
Love, your old pal.
Liam immediately insisted we find him. We tracked him down at a soup kitchen, and when Daisy saw him, she leapt into his arms, and he cried with joy. Liam suggested we visit him regularly, and we did. Over time, we learned his name was Edward, and though life had been hard for him, his love for Daisy had never faded.
Months later, we received another letter from Edward—he had found a job and a place to live. He thanked us for believing in him. Edward became part of our extended family, and I’m forever grateful that saying “yes” to kindness changed everything for all of us.
It’s a reminder that sometimes, even small acts of kindness can change lives.
